Top neighborhoods in Reykjavik

Downtown Reykjavik

Downtown Reykjavik captivates visitors with its eye-catching mix of colorful iron houses and bold modern architecture. The towering Hallgrímskirkja church dominates the skyline, while cultural gems like Harpa concert hall and quirky Iceland Phallological Museum await exploration. You can stroll past Parliament House or check out local art at Reykjavik Art Museum all within this walkable cultural hub. Most attractions are just a 10-minute walk apart, making this neighborhood perfect for curious travelers who hate waiting for buses. Traditional restaurants serve up authentic Icelandic cuisine like fermented shark and fresh seafood, while cozy boutique hotels offer that signature Nordic minimalist charm with geothermal heating.

Þingholt by Center Hotels

Þingholt by Center Hotels

10/10 Excellent
"Our recent stay at Þingholt by Center Hotels was absolutely fantastic — and honestly, you can’t beat the location, location, location! Situated right in the heart of Reykjavík, the hotel is perfectly placed for shopping, dining, and exploring the city’s top sights. If you’re joining guided tours, Bus Stop #6 is only a three-minute walk away, which made everything incredibly convenient. The staff were super friendly and welcoming throughout our stay, always happy to help. Our room was spotless and thoughtfully equipped with a minibar and small fridge, which was a nice touch after long days of sightseeing. Breakfast each morning was delicious, and we especially enjoyed the hotel’s happy hour at the bar. There’s also a cozy spa and a small gym available for guests (exercise bikes and dumbbells). While the hotel doesn’t offer free parking, we found it very easy to park nearby. Free parking is available along the residential edges of the city center and at a free lot near the church, and with the Easy Park app, managing parking was simple. We had a car for the entire week and never had any issues. Overall, I would absolutely recommend Þingholt by Center Hotels to anyone visiting Reykjavík. Comfortable, friendly, and perfectly located — it made our trip even more memorable."

Alda Hotel Reykjavik

10/10 Excellent
"So from the moment we arrived to be greeted by two smiling faces on reception set the tone really. This is the way to greet guests...This carried on throughout our stay and was greatly received.. Hotel in perfect location. 11 minute walk to Bus Stop 12 for some tour pick ups. 17 minute walk from bus terminal once you have arrived on the bus from the airport. (Recommended as taxi expensive from airport and even for short journeys) 20 ish minute walk to harbour for other tours on water (whale watching or Northern Lights) Room was cosy shall we say but had everything we needed including a fridge which came in very handy. Had a problem with the TV but that was dealt with quickly by replacing it. In house restaurant and also hairdressers and Starbucks just off main reception for pastries etc. Bonus supermarket 1 minute walk is about the cheapest place about that we found for our baguettes and sandwiches to take on tours. Very fresh, clean, modern hotel and would stay again. "
