Where to Take the Best Photos of Lisbon?

Blazing blue skies rise above, and tiers of brilliant white walls and red roofs spill down the hillsides of Lisbon towards the azure waters of the Tagus delta and the Atlantic Ocean. Lisbon’s viewpoints allow visitors to take in its incredible beauty.

As the city is built on the slopes and summits of several hills, there are many spots to find incredible views. Lush terraces, church gardens, and elegantly manicured parks have all been designed to make the most of Lisbon’s natural viewpoints. Whether you’re climbing to a castle, visiting museums, or just exploring the city as you find it, make sure to stop at some of these places to gaze in wonder at Lisbon’s incredible views.

1. Miradouro das Portas do Sol

Spectacular views of Old Lisbon

Ideale per: Foto, Storia

With astounding views of the azure waters and Old Lisbon, it’s no wonder Miradouro das Portas do Sol is a popular place to sit and relax for locals and tourists. The fact that this wide balcony is positioned right in front of the Azurara Palace, now the Decorative Arts Museum, doesn’t exactly hurt, either.

From this spot, you get great views and photo ops of some of the most exquisite buildings in Old Lisbon, from churches to palaces, many vividly outlined against the blue Portuguese sky. The name translates to “gateway of the sun,” and it’s easy to see why, as the sky is wide open above you. But don’t worry, there’s covered seating for those who prefer the shade.

It’s undoubtedly the view that will take your breath away; Lisbon’s many glories spread out before you beneath the sky. But don’t miss the greenhouse with its exotic plants and picturesque lakes and pools, or the grandeur of the Pavilion, which eagle-eyed visitors might recognize as the setting for one of Shakira’s music videos.

4. Miradouro da Senhora do Monte

The highest hill in Lisbon

Lisbon cityscape postcard view from the viewpoint Miradouro da Senhora do Monte at sunset.

Ideale per: Foto, Storia

Where better to find sensational views than the top of Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, the highest hill in Lisbon? Atop the hill is a statue of Mary, encased in glass, that gives the place its name. The view itself stretches into a panorama, including the Castle of St George itself, which emerges from the treetops on the opposite hill.

The small, 1700s chapel by the viewpoint is only open for a couple of hours in the afternoon, but it does contain a strange artefact: a stone chair said to bless pregnant women with easy childbirth. It’s a charming little chapel with an ornate golden altar, so time your visit with its opening hour and check it out.

Nearby, there’s plenty to do as well, with two lush gardens, mesmerizing murals, and historic churches and buildings galore. There are tram and bus stops nearby but do climb the steps to reach the best views.
