This place is terrible in every possible imaginable way. The lobby was crowded with drunk people and smelled of smoke. The room smelled musty and had debris and hair on the ground. The heat did not work. When we complained, the front desk attendant did respond and had to literally remove the existing AC/Heat unit and replace it at midnight. I have never done a review of anything online before, but I wanted to write about the Henlopen Hotel because our family experience was wonderful. Everything in the hotel worked and the rooms were clean, but it's true that the hotel could probably use some renovation. Renovation or not, however, the hotel experience was not diminished. The views from […] rooms were incredible and the balconies were wide and had chairs to sit down on to enjoy the ocean. I thought the breakfast was great. While fresh fruit would be welcomed, what was on offer sufficed for a morning of relaxation. The staff were really kind and helpful. If I wanted information on restaurants they were a wealth of information and more than happy to go online for more information if needed. When I arrived at the door with too many things, someone was there to open the door. I don't know if I've ever stayed at a place with kinder staff, and I travel regularly. Nice hotel, great location. Not the prettiest or in the best condition but does the job and provides a good continental breakfast. Right on the boardwalk and you can't beat that. You have to pay for wi-fi in case that's important in choosing a hotel.

The staff doesn't seem to care. The room, too, shows a lack of any warmth. Hospitality is a word with little meaning here. Everything was by rote, no smiles. Light bulbs in fire exits missing. Noisy ballroom and early AM construction noise did lead to a fair refund. On the beach a big plus but we wouldn't stay here again.

It's a two star hotel, it was safe and quiet. No complaints for what was spent. Room cleanliness was however questionable. Entering a room that was to be Cleaned to find a cookie and potato chip wrappings in the dresser draw.The tub was not cleaned in the morning raising cleanliness issues. No paper or pen to write with.

despite some negative reviews I have read, I booked a room for a weekend with my friends. I was very pleasantly surpised that the front desk staff was more than helpful and friendly.I asked for suggestions for places to eat, and was given several very good suggestions along with a map showing where they were located by Arlina. Our housekeeper Teresa even left us extra towels outside our door even though we had hung the "Do not Disturb" sign. We really appreciated that.The hotel is on the end of the boardwalk, and was very quiet. The beach was mere steps from the beach, and just a short walk on the boardwalk to the center of town. There is also a parking garage on site, so there is no worry about finding a parking spot.And the continental breakfast that was included helped with meal expenses. Very very nice. This hotel has a free breakfast, cereals milk, juices,coffee, bagels toaster danish, muffins and nutrigrain bars and oatmeal for microwave. This was so easy and saved us money. Oceanfront balcony made this the best vacation ever. September weather was perfect to open balcony door with cool ocean breezes. The bed was old and shot, there was construction/remodeling going on and had to listen to the work all day long. Bathrooms were a joke, you could barely get in and turn around to close the doors. We have stayed here before and found it to be ok, but this time was disappointing and will not be staying here again. Room #1. Key lock to door hard to open because of old doorknobs and locks (key lock). Screen door to balcony off the track and broken so that we were not able to keep the sliding glass door to the balcony open while keeping flies and […] other flying insects out with the screen door. Because of this, we requested a different room. (Not sure why they would keeping renting a room with a broken screen door). Room #2: Also had a broken screen door but not as bad. I was able to secure it shut with a bit of effort. But this room smelled like bad B.O. The wife did not smell it, so I ignored it. The fridge hardly worked. It did not get cold enough. With the first shower, the pole and shower curtain fell completely off the wall. All the staff was emotionless and seemed to be silently fed up with their jobs and probably the never-ending complaints I'm sure they got. When I suggested they wait to rent out the first room again untilt the screen was fixed the said nothing and looked at me with a blank glance. Lastly, the quickest route to the boardwalk is to the rear of the buillding, but the probalem is there is no ramp, so if you have a baby stroller like we did, you have to slowly and carefully pick up the stroller and gradually step down the stairs. Being right on the boardwalk was very nice but this property is old and in the process of being refurbished; as a result I couldn't enjoy my time on the partial oceanview balcony because of the noise from compressors. The front desk was fan irly efficient but not particularly helpful. When I got into the room I noticed that the pull down shade was installed […] crooked; as a result the shade was flush with the wall all the top but by the bottom of the window there was an inch wide gap between the shade and the wall. Peep show time! I reported this in the morning and by the time I got back from breakfast it was fixed, which was good, On the minus side, the breakfast... everything wrapped in cellophane, and only whole milk, no fat free. It's about the location for us and this is right on the beach so didn't have to go far with all the beach stuff. We had bikes and they had no problem with us taking them to our room. Hotel is old and needs major work, like our door was hard to close and there was no screen door on our balcony, but we were on the 6th floor and we left the balcony door […] open all night and no problem with bugs. Toilet -bathroom tiny but double sinks are separate. Roomy room even with 2bikes. Breakfast was prepackaged bagels, cereal and muffins ... Not the best, but we could grab and run. Beds comfortable. Right on the boardwalk, with parking provided, we walked everywhere and never moved our car. Our room was average, nothing special about it. We did see one roach, which is the reason for the lower cleanliness score, but otherwise was clean. Every room has a balcony which is nice. Overall great location with very average accomadations.

We had the most amazing uninterrupted beach and ocean view from our balcony up and down the coast as far as we could see. This ocean front room was very large with 2 queen size beds and a couch sitting area. It has a large bathroom with double sinks and separate shower from bathtub. The hallways to the rooms are very disappointing with huge trash cans by the elevators that have a "service back door feel to them". Unfortunately the rooms are a bit run down and not as clean as I would like them. Front desk service was excellent . Location is the best with a spacious beach, and a very short walk to restaurants and shops but far enough to be quiet at night. Older hotel that needs some updating. Rooms were clean. No swimming pool. No DVR. Continental breakfast was decent. Overall it was decent for the price especially for the ocean view and close to the beach location requireing little walking with chairs, umbrella etc. Would consider booking there again.

this was our 4th time at Henlopen - we love it. the employees are very accommodating and you just can't beat the location. Just two items on my wish list for Henlopen. Outdoor showers like they have for the condo owners and couples WITHOUT children being able to use the condo rooftop pool. Nice staff at the hotel. It also has a great location. It was not as nice as we'd have liked. The a/c is loud as it cycles on and off. The room appeared clean but could have used a deep cleaning. The buffet breakfast suited us (cold cereal and milk for the kids), but could be upgraded.

I stayed at this hotel 36 years ago so of course I wasn't expecting it to be the same. Half of it is condo now and the formal dining room on the 8th floor is used for banquets and special events these days. We lucked out completely! Booked a standard room and the girls at the front desk upgraded us to a King Bed with an oceanfront view! Aside from that they had to be the nicest staff we'd ever encountered in a hotel. The rooms were beautiful and had a wicked shower! Had a great time!

Room and bath was very good, balcony needed some cleanup. Front desk staff can use some customer service skills, specially at check out time. Wi-Fi service is available but they charge a fee which was disappointing. Room fee was high enough to cover it. Breakfast could be better, staff was friendly.
