When we checked in having booked a family room, we were given 2 doubles so that our 16 year old could have his own room...result! The hotel is a little dated in parts, but we were comfortable and our room was fine.

A lovely main building but a disappointing extension where the bulk of the bedrooms are house. Comfortable bed and bathroom, but the room had an overkill of cheap looking built-in dark wooden furniture with a large number of water or other marks all over it. It made for a gloomy ambience. Nice enough hotel. Pictures were a little deceiving, but service was fine, comfort was fine and cleanliness was fine. Breakfast in the morning was not great. But overall can't complain. It was good the hotel had a car park with security barrier.

Have visited many times and the location, bar and breakfast are all very good for the price. This is an older hotel and as such the rooms can be a mission to walk to (up and down many stairs) and are a little dated, but they are large and comfortable with TV, bath and shower. Decoration, cleansiness and comform were exceptional. Would defineately stay here again. I would have scored higher but the room was very cold, I spent the afternoon with a scarf and coat on (I don't generally feel the cold too much) and I did inform reception who advised they do not have any more fan heaters. Pleasant helpful staff and a very good breakfast served in a pleasant dining room. The decor has seen better days, however, The wooden furniture in the room was scratched and there was generally a tired appearance to the entire hotel. A shame in some ways because it could easily be at least a star higher with some modest investment.

Good price but faulty door lock in first room I was allocated and no wifi signal in one I was moved to. At end of stay you have to get out of car to open car park barrier and it came down before I could exit! A shame because with a little more attention to detail this hotel could be very good.

Lovely looking building set in a handy location near to Birmingham City centre. Very comfortable, homely feel to the hotel. The family room we used for two adults and two children was clean and comfortable. Breakfast the next morning was buffet style and of a high standard. As much as you can eat too! Traditional hotel with plenty of car-parking space. Staff were friendly and when I had an issue with the shower in my room, I was moved to a room down the corridor with minimal fuss. Access to the internet with a wired connection in both rooms was really very handy, and I would recommend staying here on the whole.

I asked for a wake up call at 7.30 am. I was awoken at 9.50 am by the noise from a children's playground nearby. I had a meeting in Central Birmingham at 10 am to attend which I was embarrassingly very late for. When I took this up with reception staff they told me that they had phoned at 7.30 but had not had any answer so they had presumed I was in […] the shower! I told them they should not have made that presumption as it was very likely that I had been asleep and had not been woken by the call and that they should have kept ringing until they got an answer. The only about this stay which was enjoyable was the bed, other than that, it was awful! Room service not allowed at 2130 when it states 2200 on the menu, wasn't told I didn't have breakfast in the room rate until the second morning, Bar pipes cleaned through at 2215, bar shuts at 2300, why not do them in the morning like most places, receptionist was […] rude, not enough towels for a twin room, smoke detector hanging off the ceiling, no air con when it states in on the website......need I go on?! Has a blue plaque on the wall to say that Tolkien stayed there. Suspect it hasn't been decorated since his last stay - all a bit tired. Service in the restaurant was terribly slow despite only 3 tables being occupied. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel We stay in hotels frequently and normally use Holiday or Premier Inns. This hotel beat them all on price during our recent stay in Birmingham and was easily comparable to the big chains. The room was large, quiet, very clean and the bed was large and comfortable. The cooked breakfast was excellent […] and included in the price. The staff were, without exception, brilliant and couldn't do enough to help to make our stay comfortable. The hotel building is listed and full of character which makes a nice change - the public rooms were all very well-maintained and elegant. Apparently J.R.R. Tolkien visited there in 1906! Minus points? Not many really, the room was a little cold but then it did snow while we were there, and bathroom was very warm went some way to compensate! The loo, whilst spotless, didn't flush too well, but when I reported this to reception she said that the rooms were going to be re-furbished soon which is great news, though there really isn't too much wrong with them as they are. Some of the corridors were a little dated as you went away from the main public areas, but it is an old building and otherwise everything was great. There was a wedding on while we were there which meant that the restaurant service was limited, but otherwise it didn't impact on our stay at all. Stay here - this place deserves your business! The Hotel were very obliging, the staff friendly and happy to go out of their way to ensure that our brief two night stay was as succesful as possible, ordering taxis, directing us to bus routes. Food was good and the location fine. A good stay.

This hotel was one of the best hotels in Birmingham in the 1960's.Whilst still trying to retain the feel of a country house it is sadly now very dated. The lounge area is still impressive with comfy leather chairs and tables. The modern circular ceiling lampshades look totally out of place in such an area. The bedroom overlooked the garden and therefore […] away from the busy road noise. Comfortable bed and room adequate although furniture was very worn. Bathroom modernised to an extent but no soap, shower cap etc.. No complimentary mineral water in room or any newpaper offered. Breakfast was good as was the service. Convenient location for access to the city since the bus stops a few yards from the hotel and complimentary parking was a huge bonus. The bed creaked and was a mix of different sized box spring and mattress which didn't fit properly. The bed was also on wheels and moved when you lay on it. Booked this hotel for the NEC, however, this is not a good location for the NEC as you have a dreadful drive through Birmingham each way during the week, weekends are ok. For the NEC you are better off staying nearer Coventry. Having said that, all the hotel staff were very pleasant and helpful, great full English breakfast if you can eat it and nice […] bar meals. Complementary internet which was good. Hotel is undergoing some room refurbishment and I had an old room which was very dated (Avocado bathroom suite!) apart from the TV. My colleague had a nice refurbished room which was much more pleasant. 10 Minutes walk to broad street and all that has to offer and a fab Indian restaurant across the road called Rose Murree excellent food but a little pricy than again you get what you pay for. Several times, I had to ask for soap for my shower and the sink. Another night or two, I had to ask for towels. The overall service from the Housekeeping staff was so so, but once you asked for something, it was taken care of.

I am aware of the location of the hotel (it's quite famous) but not the carpark. I travelled backwards from 5 Ways and still could not understand how to access it. I did a u-turn and passed the hotel but there's no clear sign for the car park! It took two attempts. Secondly, there's a boom gate in front of car park. The receptionist told me to simply […] approach it and it will lift... am I telepathic that I should know this? This sums up so much of Birmingham to me: real basic, sort of 'raised eyebrows' attitude. As in 'we know it, so everyone does.' Gorgeous receptionist though and lovely. Russian? Strange how one other member of staff seemed to be giving her a telling off in front of me however (dark hair, glasses). Should that have been done discretely? Hotel has lovely front edifice, all floodlit at night with blue plaque mentioning Tolkein. We chose this hotel mainly for the free parking and the proximity to the town centre but were very surprised and very impressed at how clean and comfortable this hotel was. Our basic double room was very spacious (not normal for England) and comfortable. The bathroom had a tub shower (also not seen too often nowadays). As it is an older building, the […] tiles, etc. showed their age, but the hotel also had signs of great upkeep and housekeeping. It is in walking distance of restaurants but still provides a free breakfast which is very delicious and had lots of choice. It is even still served (not just put out in large bins)! The staff was really accommodating and friendly when asked for things. Both the night porter and morning staff went out of their way to help us when my husband fell ill, making my husband feel very comfortable and less embarassed. The Plough and Harrow was a very clean, nice boutique hotel. Every staff member was very nice and anxious to please. The rooms were comfortable and breakfast was great. Price was very reasonable considering it included a full English breakfast. I can't believe we could have found a better value anywhere. We would highly recommend this hotel.

Have stayed here before - rooms are large, if a little tired, but plenty of cupboard space, trouser press and coffee making facilities. Own car park which is free. It was not good value for money. The room was basic and the bathroom not completely clean.The breakfast was good on the first day but at the week-end the breakfast buffet was just average. The personnel were quite friendly but not overly helpful.
