The only complaint that I had about my stay was that I was initially charged for using the safe when I didn't. I noticed the charge on my debit card and called to request that it be refunded and it was. Otherwise, I was very satisfied. I was visiting NYU Law for an admitted students weekend, so the location was pretty convenient. I read reviews before […] going and saw that people who stayed on the second floor or higher had a more positive experience, so I called the day of and requested to be assigned a room on a higher floor, and the staff was very cooperative. I had also initially booked a two bed room because it was cheaper online, and when the front desk staff realized that I was there alone they moved me to a queen bed room for no charge. The rooms were small and there was some street noise, but I don't know what else people expect in the East Village. Okay, the only reason I didn't give the GEM a higher rating in some of these departments is because 5 was all I could give it. I'm a former NYC native and I was looking for a remotely affordable place to stay that was very close to two specific places in NYC and Brooklyn, that was clean and nice, and also in a neighborhood where we could hang out if […] we wanted to. Finding this hotel online was a freakin' LOTTERY win. The price for the 2 days was less than most comparable hotels in the area, and the area itself should get a 10 out of 5. Right on the north side of SoHo/Nolita, just on the south edge of the East Village, steps to the subway, right by the Williamsburg Bridge (for cabbing it to Brooklyn), I mean that ALONE makes it worth it. But then you add that the room, though tiny, was comfortable and clean, everything worked and it was quiet, and THEN add that the staff were tremendously helpful and friendly, and I say staying here is a no brainer. If I ever have to be down in that 'hood again, I'm definitely looking up these guys for a place to stay. With the discount that Hotels.com gave us, it was well worth it (although for the price the hotel itself quoted us when we had to extend our stay, I don't think I'd have stayed...just to be totally honest.) Hotel was clean and in a great location. Decor is fun and funky. I would stay there again.

Great hotel - rooms are a bit small, and I would recommend making a special request not to be on the ground level. But the location is great and the staff are super helpful. Would recommend/stay again!

YOU WILL NOT SLEEP WELL HERE. Super super tiny rooms with tiny beds (double). VERY loud rooms - worst nights sleep I have ever had in a hotel. Great location but might be the loudest and least sound proof hotel in the region. Also, if you stay a few days in a room every morning housekeeping will knock on your door and wake you up. This hotel was located so conveniently for my recent business trip to SoHo. There is a huge Whole Foods Market one block away. The Hotel staff was professional and helpful with directions and ideas for restaurants, entertainment, etc. The rooms are very small, but clean and well maintained. Overall, a great stay for a very affordable price!

Clean room with basic amenities. The service desk was very helpful and responsive. We stayed on the 2nd floor. There was some traffic noise, but not more than expected. The location was great- 1/2 mile to NYU and close to subway.

Reasonable price, good location, and welcoming service. Yes, the rooms are small but they include everything you need. And there is a parking garage one block away. The overnight parking cost of $30 is the cheapest in the city.

Great location for Lower East Side. Don't go there looking for a place to relax after a long day of touring though...

Originally given a room in the basement which my girlfriend did not like. Requested a room change and staff was very accomodating. Small rooms but clean and up to date. They didn't clean our room and we were blasted awake in the middle of the night by a fire alarm in the room next door (which somehow took the management half an hour to resolve). The room is unsurprisingly tiny, which is perfectly acceptable for what you're paying, but the problem is the degenerate service. This hotel stinks....no window...put in the basement room...once booked ....if you do not like the room....tough....the hotel and hotels.com are no help what so ever. thanks for nothing....patronage to hotels.com means nothing...good thing there is plenty of competition to go to.

I'm a very picky sleeper. Need a comfortable bed and quiet! This was it. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Wish I'd had time to do their ipod walking tour. We'll be back. . . . soon I hope. Parking was a few blocks away but it did exist.

A staff that makes u believe they'd Take a bullet for u. whole foods next store. A sparklingly clean room. 20 min Walk to courthouse. Great, reasonably priced restaurants of any cuisine. Vibrancy of nyu nearby. For this price!!! Come on!!! R u kidding?

The Gem is nicely located close to the lower east side, soho, bleeker St , Chinatown & little Italy. The hotel is clean and comfortable. The staff is friendly and helpful.

Four walls, a bed and a bathroom that were all clean and well maintained. The front desk staff was very friendly and extremely helpful in terms of the surrounding area i.e. how to navigate, where to go...etc. In this part of town there is FAR too much going on to be spending ample amount of time in your room anyhow. room was clean, comfortable and perfect for a quick stop before heading to the airport the next day. Room was small but still fit 2 adults and 2 children just fine. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. I would stay here again for a one or two night stay.

Ive stayed at this hotel before and it was fine, but this time they have me a room in the basement and i felt like I was sleeping in a submarine. The single window was maybe 16" tall, most of which was filled with a heating/air cond unit. The curtains were jammed shut. Very small rooms (as most NYC hotel rooms). However, the service was beyond great. Jose at the front desk was especially kind. They really know how to treat guests!

My husband and I loved this hotel--right next to a little park in Soho, great shopping and restaurants nearby, subway close, clean, well kept, but really noisy. We were on the first floor right across from the elevators, and heard everyone coming and going whenever. Also, maid service took the dirty towels but never gave us replacements. At the end […] of the three night stay we were down to just our two bath towels. We wouldn't catch it til we were ready for bed. Despite the "deminutive" room (remember it is a boutique hotel), the decor was hip and it was very clean. There is street noise, so bring ear plugs if you are sensitive or try to request a room in the back of the hotel. I liked the location--easy to catch taxis, good restaurants and shops. The employees were very friendly.

Our room was located in the dungeon. We had to call the front desk to ask for pillow cases for our pillows. I felt like we were staying in a converted walk-in closet. The hotel staff were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The location is great, overall very convenient, would definitely go there again.

Room is well organized with friendly staff. Whole food is across the street. Very nice neighborhood for family.

Although the hotel was clean and everything appeared to be new, I would not stay at this hotel again. When we arrived, no one was at the front desk and we has to wait at least 10 minutes. This was one of the least expensive hotels running up to the 10th anniversary of 9/11 - only reason I selected it. Other than the F train stop right x the street and the proximity to the great LES hood, there aren't too many redeeming qualities for this hotel. Stinky room, noisy AC, threadbare fitup, a much too thorough desk staff (delaying check in) […] all combined to make the little boutique that could, couldn't. Avoid unless absolutely necessary. I chose Gem Hotel Soho because it is so close to NYU Thrid North Dorm, which my daughter wil live for her freshman year. It has subway near by. we can walk around to a lot of places or by subway. Staff there are very friendly.
