Great for the price and location. Will stay again

all staff I encountered were very friendly and courteous. There was n o microwave in my room and the message retrieval system on the bedroom phone did not work. $14.99 charge for breakfast in hotel was expected. I have been charged $17.32 for two glasses of wine during my stay, despite the advertised complimentary glass.

ABOVE AVERAGE HOTEL, pricy, not many perks other than its style and ambience.

I liked the hotel very much. The bathroom was very clean, but extremely outdated- old shower curtain, the oldest tub fixtures I have ever seen, industrial- looking toilet with no lid. I found the front desk staff nice, but not very helpful. Example- when I asked the bellman to hail me a cab, he told me to go down the street to a non-existant cab stand. […] I ended up getting a cab at another hotel down the street. Good atmosphere, loved the Library Bar and friendly staff. Room was small but well-kept. Great location for access to Union Square, transportation.

Excellwnt stay in Union square our first stay in the city. Helpful staff gave excellent recommendations for meals and activities. Would reccomend to others

The hotel is well located to Union Square and to the Financial District where my office is. It is on the edge of Chinatown and is near some great restaurants including the new Burritt Tavern where we met Charlie Palmer on Saturday night. I loved the option to forego cleaning each day and get a voucher for the bar. I usually don't worry too much about […] new sheets or towels in a long stay more than every couple of days and it was great to get rewarded for that! The menu at the bar was also good and the truffle fries totally addictive. All of the staff that we dealt with were very helpful and chatty. This hotel was very good for its price. Room was clean and big enough for two of us. Hotel was old, carpet was old but clean. The neighbourhood was good. They did not change the towels and bedsheets for the three days we stayed in. But room was cleaned everyday. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

This is our second stay at this charming and comfortable hotel. Staff is always friendly, our room was lovely and the hotel is in a great location. Our room was roomy and quiet. Perfect stay!

Really enjoyed my stay at Hotel Rex. The staff are friendly and extremely helpful. Location fantastic. The bar is your quintessential neighborhood bar where everyone's a friend especially with the nightly complimentary glass of wine. Rooms are quaint and bed very comfy. Highly recommend!

The staff were super friendly and had treats and a toy for our 4-legged friend! The only disappointment was that we had been given misinformation on the phone -- we called ahead to ask if we could leave the dog alone in the room for short periods of time, and they said yes, leading us to book the room. But when we arrived the desk clerk said we were […] to NOT leave the dog unattended. We managed to find a friend in the city to sit him for a few hours while we were away at a dinner, but it caused us a lot of undue stress. It would be good if the website stated the pet policy more clearly than the information that is currently there. That being said, our 4-legged friend LOVED the room! He was totally comfortable and acted as though he was at his own home the entire time. The overall ambiance is CHARMING, with art and literature everywhere. Sitting in the Library Bar with a glass of wine in hand made me feel like I was one of the 1920's French expatriate intellectuals, conversing in the salon. You won't be disappointed with your stay. Enjoyed the location of the hotel...close to everything. It was a warm atmosphere and the staff very helpful. The small bottle of wine in the room added a nice, convenient touch.I would definitely stay again and recommend.

I spent 2 nights while I celebrated my 70th birthday. The staff couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. They even kept a big surprise a secret. Our room was quite comfortable and we found the ambiance of the entire hotel to be charming and inviting. The location is perfect, although I am sad to see that the neighborhood is a bit seedy.

The hotel is only one minute walking distance to the middle of union square, and close to all shops and restaurant, its also just a couple of blocks away from chinatown. I loved the hotel! We wanted to have a night in the City after Christmas and were delighted w/ the Rex. Able to walk to Chinatown for dinner, caught the cable car on Powell St to Ghiradelli Sq for a late desert and easy morning walk to Union Square for shopping. Its home to us now whenever we go to the City. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is cosy, quiet and so well located if you are shopping or doing business in the Union Square area. Yhe cable car is half block away for a ride to the wharf area. We have already reccomended it to our friends.

What a lovely Hotel. There is a mascot pug dog named Max, sitting on the chairs. The bar is called the library bar, complimentary wine, Books abound everywhere, Art work on all the walls. The hotel is a block away from Union Square. I highly recommend this hotel.

My boyfriend and I stayed here to enjoy a night of strolling downtown San Fran, Union Square etc. It was a charming place with character, some funky artsy decor in an older building with smaller rooms that were cozy and bright. Outside street noise was not an issue (were were on the 7th floor). The front desk staff were friendly and a free glass of […] wine was offered upon our arrival/check-in at a bar with a library-like motif in a laid back not too crowded atmosphere of people enjoying live music by a guitar and vocals musician. It was just a short walk to Union Square. Plenty of nearby places to eat and drink. Lots of theaters in the area. Would be a great place to stay for a weekend or if seeing a show in the city. This was an excelent choice for my first trip to San Francisco. Very quaint ambiance. I loved the quotations from books on the walls beside the elevator.

This was our first experience and it was lovely. The location is perfect for cruising around the City, clean and comfortable. The staff are quite helpful and friendly, great little bar (and bartender!) to have a glass of wine and meet other guests and regular locals. Max is the best greeter, we have checked out his facebook page!

Nice hotel and a good break if from the big chains. Wine happy hour is a nice touch. Most of the staff were helpful but ran into a little attitude from a few of them. On balance, a good stay and I would book again.

great location, great free wine in lobby, access to a lot in the neighborhood and cheaper than most around. quiet hotel overall, but could hear some noises through the bathroom, but not a problem at all. great lobby. i'd stay again and recommend

Have stayed at Hotel Rex before and find it still charming, friendly, intimate and in great area. The Lobby Bar is one of the best features - cozy and comfortable place to have a glass of wine, or dinner, chat with friends or just sit and enjoy a book. The Lobby Bar is stocked with many volumes and available to guests - and to my surprise this time […] there was a movie being shown in the Lobby Bar on Monday night - no need to stay anywhere else. Max offers NO "service.". Location is good, but the rooms are worn and tired. Beds are barely OK.

A charming place with a resident dog who fits right in. Rooms feel like you're a guest at a home instead of a hotel. Convenient to cable cars and public transportation and good restaurants. We liked it a lot!

After browsing the internet for days to locate the perfect hotel for our one night in San Francisco, We chose Hotel Rex. We absolutely loved the hotel - our room was absolutely beautiful and there truly was nothing lacking. The make up mirror with the night light in the bathroom, robes, slippers, everything about the Hotel Rex was first class yet comfortable […] at the same time. Overall a good stay at Hotel Rex. Great location but the valet is very slow and the queen bed in my room was pretty uncomfortable.

I had to listen to arguing neighbors, which is bad enough, but it's worse to have to smell their cannabis and bathroom trips.

This three day stint was our second time at the Rex. The place is very cute and comfy, and reasonable. It is just around the corner from Union Square and a half block from a cable car line. It remains one of our favorites and we'd stay there again.

Our room was nice, comfortable and cozy. However, the bathroom was severely outdated, specially for something in this price range. Overall, it was a pleasure to stay here.

I guess our friends have no taste in hotels. They stay here often; my wife and I would not stay here again. One very slow elevator for 7 floors. Our cell phones would not work in any part of the hotel. When we asked the desk about this they simply responded that yes it is a problem. They claim there is wifi but it is almost impossible to get. We had […] to go outside the hotel to use our phones. No coffee in the rooms and their happy hour is pathetic at best and limited to one glass of wine. One can do a lot better in that city.
