Great service, good breakfast, tea & cookies, wine & cheese, what more could you ask for?

We booked this hotel not knowing anything about it and were very pleasantly surprised by the room, the service and the excellent location in the heart of the Pearl district. We even stayed an extra night, and they honored the less expensive hotels.com rate.

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel--our room was clean and quiet and the hotel staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. We were always greeted with a smile at the front desk--this leads me to believe that the staff are happy--which makes the guests happy! Well done!

Warm and friendly staff. Picturesque lobby and room, slightly schizophrenic hallways. Broken latch on bathroom window and other small fixture-y issues were only blemish. Tea time, breakfast, etc are all very pleasant and unusual perks that will help the Mark Spencer stand out in our memories.

Nice staff, right in the middle of everything, but the building is very old and may have been updated at some point, but it needs to be updated again. The rooms were small, but clean and I wouldn't have minded the older look so much if the bed didn't squeak and the pillows weren't so hard... We enjoyed our stay, however, a few comments. First, we had a jr. suite. Very small - hardly able to walk between tv and bed, plus the pull out couch was designed as a trundel - our two teenagers had feet hanging off the side of the beds - not ok. We had to leave a night early - mark spencer was not helpful re our change in reservation as we'd reserved […] online. They basically said they were unable to help. I did, overall, appreciate most the desk staff as well as little perks like the latte machine in the lobby. The continental breakfast was a bit stingy, but also had limited space. We'd come again. Hotel won some environmental silver star award, it was hanging on the wall. Clean, friendly, we rented two rooms, both at same cost, ours had a nice community area, the other a walk in closet. both were same price, you should call hotel to request what you want. Pleasantly surprised with our stay at this hotel. We immediately received a free upgrade. This hotel is one block from Powell's Bookstore and within walking distance of many restaurants, shopping, mall, theater, etc. Once we parked, we did not need to drive anywhere. Only downside was the $18 to park at the hotel for 24 hours. Our bed was able the most […] comfortable of any we've ever had. Even my very picky teenager said it was all great. Daily wine reception in lobby for adults and hot chocolate and cookies for kids. Very nice staff, too! Upon leaving, we received a 20% for our next visit that does not expire. This older-style hotel was a steal at the rate we got. Complete with decent breakfast and a wine hour, as well as a kitchenette and very pet-friendly service, it provided everything we were looking for. Beds were comfortable and clean. Only minor complaint is the bathrooms are quite dated and could use a renovation - no counter space in our room.

In most hotel rooms, I can use the fan on the climate control to mask noise. At Mark Spencer, with its thin walls, I didn't have this option (there was a deafening blower on the little stove hood!) but fortunately it was a relatively quiet night....

Who knew the largest book store in the USA is half a block away from the hotel? What a great stay and a wonderful spot. The staff were friendly and beyond helpful. Witihn walking distance to many hotels, theatres and 10 minutes from the Weekend Market which is a must. My only suggestion is not to be an early bird at the market. Great location, great hotel! Would stay there again!

Renovations have been well done in such an old building. Still has the old charm, but, AC, Plumbing, Fixtures clean and modern. I had the fold out couch for one night and the mattress needed improvement. Proximity to downtown, transit, restaurants and bars it excellent. The 4th time I have stayed their. We really enjoyed our experience & were super excited to be able to bring our puppy for a small fee. Enjoyed the wine hour & the continental Breakfast. Everyone was really friendly. We will be back!

Did not like room or parking had to wait to check in but they want to. have a good repor with the guests. Room was tiny, loud and smelled bad but they comped my parking and seemed grnuinely in in fixing it. Goid for them!

Service was great! The room was clean, it was older, but updated. Downtown location was great, close to many bars, restaurants and shopping as well as the Max light rail. They even let us keep our car parked until late afternoon of the day we checked out. Would definitely stay here again!

The Mark Spencer Hotel is conveniently located, comfortable, and reasonably priced. And the staff was extremely helpful, polite and went above and beyond during each and every interaction throughout my stay.

The hotel is perfectly located in walking distance of everything in downtown Portland or the Pearl District. There are a few really nice restaurants and bars right outside the door, but the hotel is very quiet. The rooms are large with dated decor. This is a nice little affordable hotel. Nothing fancy, but clean and quiet. They have an awesome coffee bar in the morning (free) where you can make your own espressos and lattes. There is a fun beer tavern in a walking distance, but otherwise there are no restaurants to mention in the neighborhood.

This was a good deal via a booking website. we paid a very resonable price for a double queen suite. It had a nice kitchenette with a lovely shower. We just stayed one night and it was perfect. The beds were comfortable and the location was very convenient. The staff was friendly and helpful. The added perk is this is a pet friendly property and they're […] "green seal". We always choose to stay at the Mark Spencer, not only because it is close to Powell's Book Store(s), but it has a European flair and feeling. It reminds us of many small boutique hotels in which we've stayed in Europe. The front desk people are friendly, efficient and especially nice. The center of Stumptown has shifted north toward the Pearl district. If you want to explore Portland, the Mark Spencer Hotel is in the middle of it all. Virtually everything you could want to do in downtown is within a short walk and if its further, the free streetcar is outside your front door. Yes, layout & decor aren't modern, microwaves aren't in […] every room, shower temp isn't even, and garage parking is tight. Pluses are a cool coffee machine in the lobby, continental breakfast, a glass of wine in the evening, and A-grade staff. For the buck, Spencer can't be beat. The hotel was close to Powell's, some great food carts, and walking distance of an excellent coffee shop. Also, it was clean, had a great front desk helper, and an enjoyable wine and tea reception. The room had a small kitchen with all the pots, utensils, etc. one would need, plus a fridge, which would've been nice for a longer stay. However, the room […] was probably the smallest room I've ever stayed in. Not terrible, just different. Had the basics and everything was clean. The bed was comfy. 12 hours of free Internet. The location is walking distance to many bars and restaurants downtown, but the rooms are old and cheesy looking. Everything is clean and the bed was comfortable. I would recommend this to people who don't care about decor and just want to stay downtown.

My only complaint about this hotel is the fact that I was woken up by what sounded like someone doing construction in my room at 7 in the morning....it was awful seeing as I had barely just gotten to sleep....!!!!

KIt was okay but someone a worker charge my visa and ain't trien to put it back that aint right. Wont b bacj

Furniture was mismatched, kitchen needed updating. Would be good to have coffee grounds for one pot. Beds were really comfortable. I didn't think the photos on the site matched the decor in real life.

The DEAL of the night You get what you pay for. Should have spent $30 more and stayed in a nicer place. But if you are on a budget there are kitchenettes in the rooms.
