A former 4 star which still is an excellent alternative given the excellent location and pleasant staff when the hotel can be booked at a discount.

The hotel staff were warm and welcoming, but could have offered to tell us more, rather than (on the whole) being left to “work it out for yourself” or asking. The rooms were very comfortable and in good order, although, as a non-smoker, I felt there was the faintest smell of cigarette smoke; (maybe from an inconsiderate previous guest) and one room […] had a small patch of damp. Outstanding in every way. Brilliant helpful and friendly professional staff who exceeded their job spec. Beautiful room, spotlessly clean, balcony views over the rooftops of historic Lille. Would not stay anywhere else- a pleasure.

Hotel is in a very good location in the city centre. We paid extra for privilege rooms which promised a view of the Bourse or Opera . Only one of our three rooms had such a view . Instead they looked out onto a side street. The hotel insisted the room title was based on the size of the room but the standard of two of the three rooms was much lower than […] the other that looked out on to the Bourse/Opera. We could not fault the location of this hotel which was situated in the heart of Lille opposite the Opera house. It was also only a short (approx. 10 minutes) walk from the Eurostar station. Our breakfast was included in our booking and we found the buffet very good with a wide selection for all tastes. We found the service good and were very happy […] with our room. Our only slight negatives would be that the wooden/laminate floor in the room could have done with a better clean as you ended up with dirty feet if you didn't wear slippers or shoes. The bathroom was a bit out-dated and had stained grouting in places. The tea/coffee making selection provided in the room were also very basic compared to other hotels we have stayed in. We would however, recommend staying at The Hotel Carlton due to it's location and history and are glad we booked through Hotels.com to get a good rate as we would not have paid the prices quoted via the Hotel's website. A lovely hotel in an excellent location, central to the main square. It certainly lives up to its 4 star rating. The staff were very polite and helpful, the breakfast buffet offered a very good selection. This hotel is ideally situated in the centre of Lille, and within walking distance from the Eurostar station. However, it has seen better days and needs refurbishment (or even some paint). The hotel was pleasant and in a very good location and what was represented on the Hotels website. The only disappointing aspect was what appeared to be a deal between a staff member and a taxi driver they had called out. The very short trip started with a discrete nod and wink between them. We stayed at the Carlton for 1 night on our recent European driving holiday. The staff were exceptionally friendly & helpful and the hotel is in an excellent location right in the town centre. It's a very old building and although clean it does look a little tired in places. We had an issue with the provision of an extra bed for our daughter, they gave […] her a cot... she's 7! However the staff were very eager to help & it was sorted out with minimum fuss. The hotel operates valet parking which is a relief as the one way system & on street parking is a nightmare in Lille. We stayed in this hotel with a small child and enjoyed our stay. We were accommodated with a rollaway bed for our child. The room was quite spacious although the bathroom is a tad small, but not a huge issue for us. We were pleased with the breakfast at the hotel, especcially since the cost was included as part of our room rate. Simply Excellent. I havent enjoyed a hotel as much in years. Town centre location, Hippopotamus Restaurant next door, very friendly and helpful staff even do valet parking.....very excellent and thanks to alkl who work there.

Hotel Carlton is conveniently situated only 10 mins walk from the Eurostar Terminal and right in the centre of the city. Our room was very comfortable; although the bathroom felt a little tight, with the toilet squezzed into a separate room within the bathroom. Surprisingly for a city centre location, there was no discernable noise (even on the first […] floor) due to the excellent soundproofing. From the Hotel you can easily explore the old and newer parts of the city on foot; nowhere is more than 15 mins walk away. There are plenty of places to eat nearby. Our experience at the Carlton could not have been worse. We arrived at the hotel to check in and they did not have an area in front of the hotel to park. We asked if a valet service was available and we were told "no". We then asked if there was a parking garage and we were told that the ten spaces were filled. With two children on a tour of Europe […] we ended up having to block traffic and struggle with our bags. The one staff member on duty came out from behind the desk and helped us remove one of the bags from our car. While cars honked behind us we managed to place the bags in the entrance and my husband searched throughout the city for a parking garage, as most were filled. We arrived in our rooms and we found paint peeling from the ceiling, inactive internet connections and stained duvet covers. The top sheets on the bed were non-existent and the bathrooms were dubiously clean. We requested that the internet connection be reset and we were told that sometimes it did not work, but we were welcome to use the one computer available in the lobby. We had requested non-smoking rooms and our asthmatic son found an ashtray in his room. The hallways smelled of cigarette smoke and we all left with sore throats after our stay. We were also told that the walls were soundproof, but our children proffered many questions about sounds they heard during the night in the room next door. The hotel is traditional & old-fashioned in a good sense - lots of lovely antique furniture in the corridors. The room was quite small (you can get bigger more luxurious rooms if you pay more) but perfect for a weekend […] break - extremely comfortable bed, lovely shower, compact but well organised. The hotel is showing its age a little & not as well maintained as it could be - crack in ceiling, creaky door, dirty outside carpet - but otherwise clean & cosy. Perfect location, right by the main square & less than 5 mins from Xmas market - all key sites easily walkable & convenient metro/tram/train stations for excursions further afield. Buffet breakfast a little limited but perfectly adequate & included in price - or you can buy delicious pastries from original branch of Paul opposite. Would thoroughly recommend! Continua a leggere

This was my 3rd stay in this hotel which has a fantastic location for exploring Lille. Inititially shown room 301. Plaster peeling of the walls, floor filthy, toilet disgusting and that was before we noticed bed covered in hairs! We thought the Carlton was a charming and well run old hotel. We had only a standard room but it was quiet and very spacious. the bed was comfortable and the facilities were first rate. Breakfast offered a great choice and was top quality.

This hotel was great. Unfortunately my stay was only for one night as I would have loved to have spent more time; not only in this hotel, but in Lille in general. Truly an amazing city and there wasn't one part that wasn't totally picturesque. The location of the hotel was perfect...right in the heart of old Lille. Everything is in walking distance...great […] restaurants, bars, cheese shops, patisseries, and shopping. The staff is incredibly friendly , helpful and spoke English. I'm not quite sure what others were talking about when they say the hotel was old, shabby, and in bad repair. Every single part of it was beautiful. It was decorated with tons of antique furniture and marble. It seems that each floor of the hotel has its own color scheme...one floor all in blue, one in red...etc. The room itself was great. The bed was dressed with really comfortable sheets and pillows. There was a nicely equipped mini fridge. The toilet was in its own little room that was separate from the bath and sink. The Carlton Hotel in Lille is in the perfect location just opposite the Opera House and very close to all the shops. After looking around the internet for a hotel we were not sure what to expect, but we were not disappointed. As others have pointed out the toilet in the bathroom is in its own cubical and is very small, but don't let that put you off […] as this was a great hotel with very helpful staff. we had room service and breakfast in our room which were both very nice. I had read many reviews about the Carlton and in the end decided to give it a shot. I have no regrets as the location was perfect and the room was comfortable. I agree the hotel could use a face lift and I never tried the breakfast as I felt it was over-priced, but I had a lovely view and overall was satisfied.

We stayed at the Carlton for three nights in Feb and really enjoyed our stay. The location couldn't be more central and the staff were always friendly, polite and willing to help us with any request. We had been allocated a large room as we requested one that was wheelchair accessible - loads of space! They happily tried to reserve us a table at a local […] restaurant on the saturday night, and when they discovered it was closed, they took it upon themselves to book another restaurant (La Compostelle - amazing) and give us vouchers for a free drink there. Read from a previous review that hotel offered valet parking, so not too concerned about taking car to stock upon french goodies, rather than eurostar as done many time before. Hotel staff very attentive and helpful, parking car right away, underground carpark , secure. Weve stayed ay many hotels in lille over the years and apart from th eroom size,this has been the best so far, so i will go back. Id choose a room without a view of the main square perhaps as altough very quieton friday and saturday evening, got much nosier early hours of morning! great to be so close to some excellent resturants, we found 10 within a few minutes walk, using top table app on i phone. Desk staff very welcoming, pleasant, and patient with my limited French, but all desk staff spoke English well. Very cozy lobby and spacious, elegant room. Neighborhood full of shops and restaurants and within walking distance to trains and Metro. Would definitley stay again.

Lovely hotel -- updated with care -- very comfortable, perfectly quiet, with helpful, friendly service -- messages taken faultlessly (and there were several messages to be taken) -- in a perfect location. Easy to walk to from the Eurostar, all of 2 minutes from the Opera, bang in the middle of town and I would happily go back for a longer period.

Great location right in the heart of Lille. Rooms were ok - nothing special and certainly not 4* - I feel slightly that they do not try as hard as they could/should as the location is so great. Change since my last visit is that there are hot drinks facilities in the rooms.

We got off the EuroStar for our first visit to Lille. The hotel was a short walk from the station (we only had small bags). The hotel itself is an impressive 19th century building on the main square. Our room was delightful, looking directly onto the Opera House opposite. Our room was very comfortable and we were delighted that it provided tea making […] facilities, quite unusual, and not provided in many European hotels. Ideal location right in the centre of Lille. What you would expect of a 4 star hotel. Reception very helpful. Only one small niggle was that the car park is a few minutes away from the hotel and is charged at 19 Euro a day.

Very nice hotel. Great central location. Staff very competent English speakers and helpful. Had the weird French feature of having no shower door/curtain so that the bathroom floor becomes a small lake every time you take a shower. No English channels on the TV.

Beautiful hotel, decor, furnishing. Room very comfortable and recently refurbished. The bathroom was a bit small but plenty of towels, toiletries, gowns, slippers. Perfect location for shopping, eating, drinking, culture. Right in the heart of Lille in walking distance of everything including the train station and the small Zoo! This is the second time […] I have stayed at this hotel and I would recommend it to friends and family. Due to the one way system, finding the road can be a bit confusing as you think you're driving into a pedestrian cobbled road, but once you realise this, it couldnt be easier to get to and park at the hotel.
