Chose the Movenpick Hotel due to it's proximity to the main railway station as we were travelling from Dusseldorf and on to Witten with an overnight... stay in Essen to take in the Red Dot Museum at Zollverein (which was excellent). Our room on the 3rd floor was fine but we couldn't get the Air Conditioning to go lower than 19 degrees so the room was quite stuffy. We opened the windows but because the room was front-facing there was quite a lot of noise from the street below. The area in front of the hotel is unfortunately 'inhabited' by a posse of early/all-day drinkers who appear to use the adjacent subway underpass for a toilet. Obviously this is not the hotels fault but it does detract from the overall impression. The reception staff were friendly and spoke English but the girl on reception when we arrived seemed at a loss when asked to recommend somewhere to eat and/or have a beer. Perhaps they could be better trained-up on the local eateries? All in all I would recommend the Movenpick - but only if you need to be near the station like we did. da Aileen da Edinburgh il 08/05/2013
